A Naturopathic Guide to Preparing Your Body for Pregnancy
Long before a positive test ever appears, the body is already laying groundwork. Eggs mature over roughly three months. Sperm regenerate on a similar cycle. Which means the preconception window ~ the three to six months before you're actively trying is arguably the most important and most overlooked stage of the whole fertility journey.
From a naturopathic perspective, preconception care isn't about urgency or restriction. It's about building a foundation: nutrient stores that are full rather than depleted, a nervous system that isn't running on empty and a body that feels supported rather than stressed. Food and lifestyle come first. Targeted support comes after, to fill the gaps real life leaves behind.
This is general guidance for anyone in the early stages of thinking about conception. If there are existing fertility concerns, irregular cycles, or a more complex health history, that's a conversation for a one-on-one consult with one of our practitioners, preconception care is never one-size-fits-all.
Start With Food
You don't need a complicated protocol. You need consistency and a plate that's doing real work.
Protein at every meal. Eggs, oily fish, legumes, tofu, tempeh, good quality meat. The building blocks for healthy hormones, eggs and sperm.
Colour, and plenty of it. Leafy greens, berries, beetroot, orange veg. Fill half the plate, most days.
Healthy fats, not fat-free. Avocado, olive oil, oily fish, nuts and seeds ~ hormones are built from fat.
Iron and B12, especially if plant-based. Red meat, legumes, leafy greens, fortified foods. Worth a blood test if unsure.
Wind back and slow down. Less alcohol, caffeine and processed food ~ progress over perfection.
Lifestyle Foundations
Protect your sleep. Seven to nine hours, consistent bedtime. Repair and hormone regulation happen overnight.
Move gently, regularly. Walking, pilates, swimming, yoga. Circulation and calm, not depletion.
Manage your stress load. Chronic stress affects ovulation, sperm quality and libido. Small daily resets matter more than eliminating stress altogether.
Mind your exposures. Cleaner skincare, cleaning products and plastics where you can, for both partners.
Don't forget connection. Intimacy that feels good and unpressured matters too, especially once trying to conceive starts to feel like a project.
Where Practitioner Support Comes In
Wholefoods and lifestyle are the foundation but most of us are also running on real-life schedules, real-life stress and soil that isn't as nutrient-dense as it used to be. This is where a few well-chosen basics can close the gap. These are the three we come back to again and again for preconception clients, alongside personalised advice.
Tresos Natal — The Everyday Multivitamin
A one-a-day multivitamin and mineral formula specifically designed to provide nutritional support during preconception, pregnancy and breastfeeding. It uses methylated, more bioavailable forms of folate (5-MTHF) and B12, along with choline, vitamin D3 and iodine, nutrients that play a role in healthy foetal neurodevelopment further down the track. It's a practical way to help cover the nutritional bases while you're focusing on food first.
Tonic Room Restore Tea — For the Nervous System
Our own naturopath-blended tea, designed to bring the body back to a natural state of balance. A gentle, spearmint and lemon-led blend with botanical herbs traditionally used to ease tension and support the nervous system — lovely any time of day, and especially grounding about thirty minutes before bed. Trying to conceive can quietly raise the body's stress load even when everything looks calm on the surface; this is a small daily ritual that supports the nervous system underneath it all.
Sitre Care & Intimacy Oil — For Connection
A 100% natural oil made for massage, daily care and intimacy, formulated with organic argan, coconut, sunflower and other plant oils — no parabens, no perfume, no glycerin. It's gentle enough for sensitive skin, vegan, and made to support connection between partners without complicating the moment. Importantly, it's formulated to be safe to use while trying to conceive.
The Takeaway
Preconception care, done well, isn't a checklist. It's a season of feeding the body properly, protecting your sleep, lowering the static of daily stress, and staying connected to your partner along the way. The basics ~ Tresos Natal, Restore Tea and Sitre Oil — are there to support that foundation, not replace it.
If you'd like a personalised plan, particularly if you've got cycle irregularities, a known fertility concern, or you're not sure where to start, book in with one of our naturopaths. We'll take a proper look at your history and build something specific to you.
