A Naturopathic Guide to Supporting Yourself and Your Baby
Pregnancy is one of the most nutritionally demanding phases of a woman's life. From the moment of conception, the body begins a continuous transfer of nutrients to the growing baby ~ and if those stores aren't in good shape, it's the mother who often pays the price.
From a naturopathic perspective, pregnancy care is about building on the foundations already in place, adapting to what your body needs trimester by trimester and making daily choices that support both of you. Food and lifestyle carry most of the load. Targeted supplementation fills the gaps that real life leaves behind.
This is general guidance for a healthy pregnancy. If you have a complex health history, existing conditions, or specific concerns, a one-on-one consultation with one of our naturopaths will give you something much more tailored.
Eating Well During Pregnancy
Eat more, not just better. Caloric needs increase as pregnancy progresses. Don't restrict and focus on nutrient density and eating enough.
Protein at every meal. Eggs, legumes, fish, tofu, quality meat. Essential for baby's growth and for maintaining your own muscle, immunity and energy.
Iron-rich foods, consistently. Red meat, dark leafy greens, lentils, tofu. Pair plant-based iron with vitamin C to improve absorption. Iron deficiency is extremely common in pregnancy and worth monitoring.
Omega-3 fatty acids. Oily fish two to three times a week where tolerated. DHA is critical for baby's brain and nervous system development and is often under-consumed.
Calcium and vitamin D. Dairy, fortified plant milks, sardines, leafy greens. Bone health demands increase in pregnancy, and vitamin D supports immunity, mood and foetal development.
Stay well hydrated. Blood volume increases significantly during pregnancy. Aim for two litres of water daily, more in warmer weather or if active.
Ease nausea naturally. Small, frequent meals with protein and complex carbohydrates. Ginger tea, cold foods and avoiding strong smells can all help in the first trimester.
Lifestyle Through Pregnancy
Keep moving, gently. Walking, swimming, prenatal yoga and pilates are all well-suited to pregnancy. Movement supports circulation, mood, sleep and labour preparation.
Prioritise sleep. As pregnancy progresses this becomes harder, but sleep is when repair, growth and hormone regulation happen. Support it with routine and rest where you can.
Manage your stress load. Chronic stress affects cortisol and blood pressure, and can impact the baby's developing nervous system. Small, repeatable daily practices matter more than dramatic interventions.
Reduce toxin exposure. Your skin absorbs what you put on it, and many conventional products contain ingredients best avoided during pregnancy. Swap to pregnancy-safe skincare and household products where you can.
Listen to your body. Pregnancy is not the time to push through exhaustion or override strong signals. Rest when you need to. Slow down as needed.
Practitioner Recommendations for Pregnancy
No wholefood diet alone can reliably meet the increased demands of pregnancy — particularly for nutrients like DHA, iron, choline and probiotics, which are either difficult to get in adequate amounts from food, or are needed in significantly higher quantities. These are the products we reach for most consistently.
Tresos Natal — Your Daily Multi
The foundation of any pregnancy supplement routine. Tresos Natal is a one-a-day multivitamin and mineral formula specifically designed to provide an extensive nutritional foundation during preconception, pregnancy and breastfeeding. It uses metabolically active forms of B6, B12 and folate (5-MTHF) alongside iodine, choline and vitamin D3, in a vegan-friendly formula. A solid base to build everything else on.
Tonic Room Pregnancy Tea — For Nourishment and Ritual
Our own naturopath-blended pregnancy tea, formulated as a nutrient-rich infusion to nourish body, baby and mind throughout the journey. Caffeine-free and thoughtfully composed to support you during this special time. A grounding daily ritual, lovely warm or at room temperature throughout the day.
Note: this tea is recommended from week 12 of pregnancy. In the first trimester, speak with your practitioner before adding any herbal products.
Eagle DHA + Choline — For Baby's Brain
DHA + Choline provides support for brain health and function, and mental clarity in adults. It supports vitamin D and choline levels in breastfeeding women, and is sourced from sustainable fish oil suppliers. DHA represents 97% of the omega-3 found in the brain and is a critical structural building block for foetal brain and nervous system development. Choline is equally important, supporting placental health and early neurological formation, yet is consistently under-consumed in pregnancy. This is one of the most important supplements on this list. Call us for practitioner code to purchase online.
BioMedica BioHeme — For Iron Levels
BioHeme features ferrous bisglycinate, combined with lactoferrin and vitamin C to support iron uptake, red blood cell production and energy metabolism. It is formulated to minimise the gastrointestinal discomfort commonly associated with iron supplementation. Iron needs increase significantly during pregnancy and deficiency is one of the most common issues we see. BioHeme's highly bioavailable form means better absorption with less of the digestive upset that puts people off standard iron supplements. Always check your iron levels with your lead maternity carer before supplementing. Call us for practitioner code to purchase online.
Metagenics UltraFlora Mother and Baby — For the Microbiome
UltraFlora Mother and Baby contains meticulously researched probiotic strains, including Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LGG®), Bifidobacterium animalis ssp lactis (BB-12®), Bifidobacterium breve (M-16v), and Bifidobacterium longum (BB536). It can be taken from early pregnancy until six months after birth to support both mother and baby's health. A healthy maternal microbiome is increasingly understood to influence baby's immune development, gut health and even behaviour. This is a 2-in-1 formula — once baby arrives, you can open the capsule and mix the contents into breast milk or formula to support their gut flora directly. Pure Mama Belly and Body Oil — For Your Skin
This all-natural, antioxidant-packed oil has been expertly formulated to deeply nourish the growing body throughout pregnancy. It combines high-calibre plant-based ingredients to boost skin elasticity and deeply hydrate skin. Formulated with rosehip, avocado, pomegranate and raspberry seed oils — the kind of high-performance botanicals more commonly found in facial skincare. Apply morning and night to belly, hips and breasts. A small daily ritual of self-care that your skin will thank you for.
The Takeaway
Pregnancy asks a great deal of your body. The best thing you can do is meet that demand with consistency ~ good food, rest, gentle movement, and a small stack of well-chosen supplements that do real work. This protocol covers the key bases for most healthy pregnancies.
